Cross-Country Treasure Hunt (And the Mystery that Followed) is a fiction chapter book (152 pages) for ages 7 - 12 featuring a homeschooling family. When 11-year-old Josh Reed (who wants to be a detective), his twin sister Brittany, and the rest of their family of seven receive an unexpected letter in the mail, they soon find themselves on the adventure of a lifetime - the ultimate homeschooling field trip!. They must follow clues, which the reader can help solve, to find each new location as they camp across America. Along the way, they see many wonders of God's creation as they end up at many National Monuments and national parks. As children read about racing away from a tornado in Tornado Alley, flying over the Grand Canyon, someone getting lost in the giant sequoia trees, getting stranded in Death Valley, and much more, they are also learning something about the states through which the family travels. Good anytime--this story would especially be great to use while studying the states. A map is included in the book for children to color in as the family in the story reaches each new state so they can see where the family is and where they might go next on this treasure hunt. Actual photos are also included. A treasure waits at the end of the hunt, but what they discover along the way may be even more valuable--the treasure of each other. Plus, a mystery develops for readers to solve. Josh thinks someone may be following them, but who and why? As the author, I actually did go on a cross-country trip, camping across America, with my homeschooling family during my growing up years and journaled about it, so the story has details and researched facts that give it a realistic feel. This book has been well-received by parents and children alike in our homeschooling community. Some even tell me their child was so engaged in the story that they did not want to stop reading. One young girl read the entire book in two days! This book was featured in late December on FLN radio network. It works both as a book for children to read themselves and as a family read-aloud book.
