Best Science Curriculum March 29th, 2009

I’m looking for ideas on what you think the best science curriculum is for K8 or any part of it. What are your thoughts and why? My criteria:

- Curriculum that builds a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and process
- Curriculum that engages and inspires interest and curiosity and confidence
- Curriculum that we can afford without taking out a second mortgage. Free would be good.

BTW, in my search for interesting science education, I’ve run across a few resources that I thought that I would mention.  These are lesser known but very useful resources.
1. The Science Songs – theres are great!
2. The FOSS Science resources
3.  Annenberg Media has complete science materials for K5.
4.  Operation Physics is a curriculum of 13 physics units for grades 4-9
5. Time4Learning has huge chunks of great interactive online science curriculum.
6. The science gizmos at explorelearning.com

Building Things March 24th, 2009

I just read an inspiring blog post about Building the Brooklyn Bridge. While the article isn’t 100% accurate (note the comment on power tools), it was worth reading. I’ll quote a little:

When Brooklyn and New York’s population was booming at the end of the 19th century, the best way to get to and from Brooklyn was via ferries. As solutions were considered, I’m sure there were those who simply thought, “More boats!” ….
