I can’t back up these stats but I’d be interested if anyone has real hard data, or thoughts on it.
In the late 90s and early part of this century, there were three red hot trends in educational choice:
They’ve each grown to about 3% of the K12 population and are now growing at a more slower rate than before, maybe 20% annually.
The current red hot trend is public virtual schooling which is growing at nearly 100% annually, primarily at the high school level. It hasn’t yet hit 1% of K12 population but it might this next year. It’s fueled by four factors:
- kids and families like it
- teachers like teaching online (ie wearing PJs)
- test results are very positive. It seems to be more effective than traditional classrooms and less dangerous
- it’s cheap, cheaper than having kids in schools
